Today, the world celebrates the fifteenth annual World Circus Day, honouring the art of circus and those who represent it. As a former European Commissioner for Culture once stated: “the Circus is a beautiful art form, and it is actually a good epitome of the European Union, a group of diverse people banding together to do something bigger than themselves, connecting communities, one might even say, united in diversity.”
With its diverse forms and centuries-long history, circus arts are an essential part of Europe’s cultural heritage. This art form, which has existed for over 250 years, has endured wars, crises, and countless challenges while preserving its unique cultural and social values, always adapting to the expectations of society and its audiences. Few artistic traditions in Europe have managed to maintain their fundamental heritage while constantly reinventing themselves to remain relevant.
There are currently around 2,000 registered circus companies in the EU Member States, directly employing approximately 15,000 people. However, the impact of European circus arts extends far beyond these numbers, reaching and inspiring millions every day, bridging generations with entertainment, wonder, and cultural value. Traditional circus is a powerful example of diligence, trust, and humility for our European societies. It does not matter where someone comes from—if they are talented and can collaborate with others, then with discipline and humanity, anything is possible.
One of the most significant European initiatives in the sector in recent years has been the launch of the BigTopLabel program. Through the collaboration of independent experts and strict evaluation criteria, this initiative assesses and certifies European circuses that excel not only in artistic quality but also in social responsibility, cultural contribution, and animal welfare standards. To date, fifteen European circuses have successfully passed on-site inspections and received this prestigious independent recognition. I’m proud to have been part of creating this and to still be involved in its ongoing operation.
On the occasion, I extend my greetings to every representative, artist, and fan of the circus world. Viva la cirque!
